Who’s minding the store?
Yesterday Jan Goldsmith, our new city attorney, issued a press release:
“Mega-Liquidation Club” Caught Operating Without a License
Owner Pleads Guilty to Advertising and Operating a “Close-Out” Sale without a License
It goes on to say that a guy named Bruno Vick held a heavily advertised electronics close-out sale in January without obtaining a “close-out” permit from the San Diego Police Department. Apparently, city law says that if someone holds a close-out sale, the person has to prove that they’re really going out of business.
But here’s the thing: the sale was held at the Convention Center, which is city property. That raises the question: Didn’t the city check to make sure this guy had all the proper permits before allowing him to use public property to sell his stuff? And it’s not like he was there for only one day; he was there on New Year’s Day and the following weekend.
I sent an e-mail to Goldsmith’s spokesperson. I’ll post her response.
