Spacecraft Gallery to close

In case you wondering why Spacecraft isn’t participating in this week’s Ray at Night… from a press release I received on Wednesday:
“Friends of Spacecraft Gallery, The Gallery will be closing for the foreseeable future. As of this week we will no longer be able host all of the fantastic artists that we’ve worked with along the way. The past three years running this space has been an inspiring adventure for us and one that we will surely miss. It is time for us to pass the torch. We’ve deeply enjoyed participating in the San Diego art scene and hope that others will continue to do so in our absence. Galleries and artist spaces are vital to fostering the cultural history and identity of any city, and San Diego is fortunate to have such a resource in its many artists and venues. Thank you for all of your support and for coming to our shows every month. All the best, Emily, Chris & Esmé”
Sad news, indeed. I talked to Chris today and I got the impression that, after three years, the financial stresses of running a gallery and the desire to move on were the main reasons behind the decision to close. Spacecraft will be missed and I wish them the best, but I certainly hope that there’s someone else out there looking to pick up the torch on what is a great art space. Pass it on, or else you could see another P.B.-style bar pop up in it’s place.

i walked by spacecraft maybe two days ago…thought to myself, “fuck I can’t believe that such a neat place like that has survived in North Park for so long.”
sad news indeed for the sd art community
