Gavin, where are your manners?
Is it proper for one city’s mayor to hold a town-hall forum in another mayor’s city—without asking permission?
Tonight, San Francisco Mayor/2010 gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom will be at Monroe Clark Middle School in City Heights (preceded by a fundraiser at the W Hotel). Ya’d think he’d have phoned up San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders to say, “Hey Jer, wanted to let you know I’m coming to your town, doing the town-hall thing.” Maybe Gav would throw in a “like it or not!” and the two would have a chuckle.
Mayoral spokesperson Rachel Laing said Newsom’s camp didn’t contact the mayor. But, she said, “Walt Sanford from the Regional Task Force on the Homeless did try to arrange a meeting with both mayors and homeless advocates to discuss the cities’ [Plans to End Chronic Homelessness] when he learned that Mayor Newsom was coming, and we agreed to host that meeting if it came together, but apparently they couldn’t make it come together on Newsom’s end.”
Interesting.

Do all people making campaign stops in their run for governor have to let the mayor of the city know?
It’s one thing for a declared candidate for state office to make a stop in a city. But, in this case, it’s the presiding mayor of another city (who hasn’t announced his candidacy for state office) coming to San Diego to meet with citizens. Seems kind of odd to not make a courtesy call.
