Mr. Combs’ Daily “Obsethssion” #5–David Adey’s “Britney’s Mental Illness”

highresdavid-adeyYou could never get a real sense of how amazing local artist David Adey’s art is until you see it up close and personal. He was certainly the highlight for me at Noel-Baza Fine Art last Friday night for the 2009 SD Art Prize: New Contemporaries II exhibit showcasing the 13 local artists who are nominated for this year’s S.D. Art Prize. He essentially uses photographs and prints (in this case it was a Britney cover from People magazine) and disassembles them using craft punches, then reassembles them on a foam canvas using small pins. The result gives the original image an almost skeletal feel, as if you’re looking straight into the vapid and empty nature of American celebrity worship (others include Micha Barton, J. Lo and the antichrist twins and David Beckham and Posh Spice). It was a delight to see that he sold the “Flower” piece at the exhibition. Definitely go check it out before the show closes on Saturday, March 21.

We were glad to see this show covered by City Beat and hope everyone will continue to follow the progress of all the emerging artists from this show. Many of them have spotlight exhibitions during the course of the year where you can see more indepth views of thier work. Go to http://www.SDVAN.net to see a schedule.
