Bill Horn: Let them eat (or at least look at) avocados
The county’s food-stamp program was one of the topics at today’s Board of Supervisors meeting. There’s lots to report, but for now, here’s a nugget—er, slice:
In response to comments by Don Davis, founder of the Caring Council, about the starkness of one county-aid office and the punitive tone of the posters on its waiting-room walls (warning applicants against fraud and, Davis noted, foul language), Supervisor Bill Horn suggested some new posters for the walls—and not just any posters: “I’m sure the farm bureau, we can give you some avocado posters to put in those waiting rooms,” Horn said. “I’m sure those are a qualified food.”
Horn’s an avocado rancher. And, by “qualified food,” he was referring to what folks can and can’t buy with their county assistance money. Problem: avocados, while delicious, are damn expensive. In some stores, you can get a quart of milk for the cost of one avocado.
