Environmental justice fighter nominated to port commission

April 29, 2009 - 5:38 pm

Seems that croonin’ candidate Marshall Merrifield has some competition in the race to become the latest Port Commissioner.  City Council members Donna Frye and Todd Gloria announced today that they are nominating Diane Takvorian, founder and  executive director of the Environmental Health Coalition, to the post.  Councilmember Sherri Lightner nominated Merrifield last week.

The job opened when Commissioner Laurie Black resigned to care for  husband, who is ill.

Wow, it looks like we may start to finally see San Diego get turned around into the right direction. Diane is such a great lady and a great advocate. She has just the expertise we need to make the Port work again. Deep breath, deep breath. Great job Todd and Donna. This is what we had in mind when learned there’d be a 6-2 progressive majority.

Diane Takvorian is a great choice for Port Commissioner, someone who will actually look out for justice socially and environmentally. We need more people like her in those positions. Thanks for being willing to take on such a responsibility for us all.

    Relieved
