Editor’s days numbered? New publisher joins Union-Tribune

The Union-Tribune’s new owners announced that they’ve made Ed Moss the new president and publisher of the San Diego’s largest daily paper. The press release said he would take the reins on May 18, which is to say, next Monday.

Moss had the head of a daily newspaper conglomerate in Los Angeles, but not long ago he was president of the Akron Beacon Journal, a daily paper owned by Black Press. The Vancouver-based publisher is owned by David Black, one of the consultants to Platinum Equity, who officially bought the paper last week.

The move bodes ill for Union-Tribune editor Karin Winner and other high-level editorial staff. Bob DeMay, a photo editor and union head at the Beacon Journal, whom CityBeat interviewed earlier this year, said the Beacon-Journal’s top editorial staff was slowly pushed out over the course of a year after Black Press purchased the paper.

Moss’ job will be to manage the day-to-day operations of the paper, including and especially, bringing costs down. The paper pink-slipped 192 employees on Thursday, and additional rounds of layoffs are expected.

  1. Jacinto Ortega Says:

A crackdown on the Union Tribune’s editorial elite would be reasonable. The editors have to be held accountable for losing readers.

  2. Pearl Says:

Do you think that replacing old editors with new ones will somehow positively influence the direction of the paper?

    • Jacinto Ortega Says:

The editors are responsible for the quality of the content. The content needs to improve in order for circulation to improve. Therefore, yes, the UT needs new editors who have higher standards than the current editors.

If I were the new publisher, I wouldn’t trust editors who continually lose readers.
