Tony Young opposes gay marriage but supports repealing ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’
The City Council’s Rules Committee just voted to recommend that the full council vote to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would repeal the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy barring openly gay men and women from serving in the military.
Interestingly, Councilmember Tony Young was effusive in his support for the bill, saying he doesn’t understand why it’s such a big deal for soldiers and sailors to be open in their sexual orientation. In 2007, Young opposed a resolution to send a letter supporting a legal challenge to California’s ban on gay marriage. In 2008, he voted against a resolution opposing Prop. 8.
The Rules Committee (Young, Ben Hueso, Kevin Faulconer, Donna Frye, Todd Gloria) vote was unanimous.
