Gay-marriage advocates not exactly arrested after sit-in
Roughly 25 gay-marriage advocates were ready to be arrested for refusing to leave San Diego County’s marriage office, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Members and supporters of the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality spent all day in the sit-in, and they had no intention of leaving when the office closed at 4 p.m. Finally, around 5 p.m., law-enforcement officers came into the office to inform the group their behavior was violating the law. About half of the activists left at that point, but organizer Zakiya Khabir told me she had a list of 25 people willing to be arrested. But, instead, officers used catch-and-release: They escorted the remaining activists outside, and then released them.
Still, Johnson considers the day a success.
“Oh yeah, we got tons of media coverage for an important issue,” she told me over the phone.
And what do a group of activists do after a hard day of protesting?
“Well, we have a final shot of us with KUSI,” Khabir said. “Then it’s off for a drink.”
