San Diego Shows–Friday, June 12
PLAN A: Kelli Rudick, Manuok, JFK, Team Abraham @ Ruby Room–Much like guitar sorceress and fellow looker Kaki King, Brooklyn’s Kelli Rudick absolutely shreds on the acoustic guitar. But it’s one thing to whip off pentatonic solos like anyone else; it’s quite another to create a new musical language with your instrument. It truly must be seen to be believed. Local bands Manuok, JFK and Team Abraham will be staring along with you in awe after their sets. PLAN B: Scarlet Symphony, Apes of Wrath, PAPA @ The Casbah–”So, Seth, do you really think that Apes of Wrath are the best band in San Diego?” Well, did you read the article? The Drowning Men, QQC @ Bar Pink–The Drowning Men are S.D.’s answer to Interpol. Derivative? Sure. But catchy in that “god, where-have-I-heard-that-hook-before?” kinda way. And I just saw QQC at The Casbah and they’ve chucked some of the goth undertones for a dash of ’80s dance party. An improvement for sure. PLAN C: Gray Ghosts, Hotel St. George, The Save Point @ Tin Can Ale House–Still haven’t been to this Bankers Hill bar yet? This would be the perfect show to break your cherry. Get there early. It’s a bit snug. BACKUP PLAN: “Be a Douchebag Night” with SJ Yusef, Biiba & Scube, Trent Kelley @ Airport Lounge–Might be good just for the people-watching. Guests are encouraged to dress up like their favorite douchebag, so… basically what you have is a bunch of douchebags dressing up like some other breed of douchebag that, for some reason, they find douchey even though they themselves are, indeed, a douchebag. Somewhere in that scenario, irony begs to be let out.
