San Diego Shows–Saturday, June 27

PLAN A: A.A. Bondy, Joanie Mendenhall (6:30 p.m.); Swim Party, Cuckoo Chaos, Gray Ghosts, Two Sheds @ The Casbah (9:30  p.m.)–You could very well spend all night here. A.A. Bondy’s 2007 release, American Hearts was an understated and underrated alt-country gem that has me anticipating his next move. And speaking of next moves, all the local bands playing tonight are working on new material so as far as fresh, exciting local music goes, tonight’s the night.  PLAN B: Daedelus, Dub Traffik Control, DMProgress, DJ Collagey @ Kava Lounge–Another major score for San Diego, this is a one-man electronic show that consists of no DJing and very little laptop work. Rather, Daedelus works with obscure instruments to create a massive wall of sound. He’s been blowing up lately, having worked with the likes of MF Doom and Busdriver, so get there early while there’s still room left on the dance floor.  PLAN C: The Choke, The Mice @ Soda Bar–On the surface, I thought The Choke was just another throwback band retreading on a style of music that’s fairly homogenized at this point (think The Sonics meets early Blondie), but Sammi Skolmoski’s interview below proves that the New York-based band’s waters run deep. Fedde le Grande @ On Broadway–It’s not often that San Diego lands respected house DJs, much less international ones, but le Grande is almost as big as they come over in Europe, scoring No. 1 hits and packing arenas. Time to step up your oonce-oonce game.
