Comic-Con ’09: Elijah Wood’s Lost theory
On Friday morning of Comic-Con, I sat on a series of roundtable interviews for the animated film 9 on Friday. The movie, directed by Shane Acker, and produced by Tim Burton and the Russian director Bekmambetov, looks terrific, and comes September 9. During the chats, which included all of the aforementioned filmmakers, along with stars Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelley, Wood, who voices the title character, mentioned that he had driven down to San Diego with Dominic Monaghan, his old buddy from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, whose appearance to announce his role on the new show, Flash Forward, was one of the worst-kept secrets of this year’s Con. Then he admitted that he’s a huge Lost fan, the show Monaghan starred on as Charlie until his abrupt death at the end of season three.
Now, Lost is big news at Comic-Con. People waited overnight to see the panel on Saturday morning, and everyone has a theory about what’s going to go down during the final season, which launches in January. Including Wood. At first, he was reluctant to share his ideas, because, as he said, “I don’t want to nerd out in front of Jennifer [Connelley],” his 9 co-star, who was sitting next to him. But hey, she wanted to hear what he had to say, too.
“I think it’s a good versus evil thing,” he said. “I think it’s Jacob and the man in black, whoever he is, ultimately it’s their play, and the parts and the pieces and the characters we’ve come to know, that’s what I think, are part of this greater battle. And they’re pawns in that. You see that, with the guy using Locke’s body to try and kill Jacob.”
And that’s when he stopped. And so did the interview.
“This is so nerdy,” he said.
