Donation-nation: Hueso’s Assembly filings show money from power company
Earlier in the week, Craig Gustafson of the Union-Tribune reported on fund-raising activities conducted by San Diego Gas & Electric for various City Council members, particularly City Councilmember Marti Emerald and City Council President Ben Hueso. The story emerged just before the City Council voted on whether to support SDG&E’s decision to cut off power in San Diego back-country during periods of high fire risk. In the story, a spokesperson for Hueso told Gustafson that Hueso had “returned a $250 contribution from an SDG&E employee because the company may have pending business before the Coastal Commission.”
But today is the due date for campaign filings by candidates for public office in California. Hueso is running for state Assembly in 2010, and he’s raised $132,517 already this year, including $700 from SDG&E employees, plus $250 from employees of SDG&E’s parent company, Sempra. There is no indication that any of the money was returned. It’s a paltry percentage of Hueso’s overall total, but nonetheless, I left a message for Hueso’s campaign spokesperson, Paola Avila, to find out just how much money Hueso returned.
Hueso will have a Democratic primary against Pearl Quinones, a member of the Sweetwater Union High School District board. Quinones has not yet filed any fund-raising papers.
In the 76th Assembly District, another familiar face, former City Councilmember Toni Atkins, has no opponent. She raised over six figures in the first part of this year, including $1,000 from Sempra directly, $500 from an executive and $150 from an SDG&E employee. The California Secretary of State’s website doesn’t show any Republicans running for either seat.
