Canes to close, Wave House to take over
As reported in this week’s issue, Mission Beach music venue and restaurant, ’Canes Bar & Grill, will close in early November. Talent buyer and marketing coordinator Pamela Johnson confirmed to CityBeat on Monday that the venue will shut its doors on Nov. 2, but declined to comment further on the reason or whether there are plans to reopen in the future. ’Canes released this statement earlier today, citing unsuccessful lease negotiations as being “unsuccessful” and that “the current landlord has decided to reclaim the space.” The press release also says that ‘Canes owners are “currently seeking alternative venues to relocate the business in 2011.” A source close to the venue tells me that ‘Canes owners tried to persuade the landlord to renegotiate the lease, but that the neighboring Wave House will be moving into the space and expanding their club.

It is truely a sad time to know that a great venue like Canes is to close. I’ve seen many concerts there as well as sunsets and have great memories. Fun times. I guess I’ll drive farther to the Belly Up, but I’m sure the wave house will not be where I’ll be going for music in the future.
Dag…fond memories of the Boredoms, Polyphonic Spree, the Holdsteady…always intimate, always LOUD AS F***
That really really sucks
I’m born and raised here in san diego and have been going to shows since I was a wee lad, but i’ve never stepped foot inside of canes. That place sucks. I really don’t care its going. I wouldn’t even care if it stayed. The Only time I went down there was to sit outside Conflict and D.R.I.when I was 16.
Weezer, Spoon and David Cross: unforgettable Cane’s memories. Rent or buy the David Cross tour DVD from 2001(?): legendary wingnut/alcoholic SLAMM freelancer forces his way into absurdist interview session with Cross “backstage” at Cane’s (that little hallway with mirror and couch about a foot from the other wall). Sample dialogue:
SLAMM writer: My buddy’s got this sweet beach house just a block away from here, on the sand. You should see it, man, so fuckin sweet.
DAVID CROSS: (after akward pause) Dude, I’m not going with you to a beach house.
I saw that interview on the DVD. That dude was wasted! It was like a real life version of The Chris Farley show. I assume that guy was blacked out while he was asking those questions. He was certainly bobbing and weaving. If anyone can name the band that was touring with David and opening all those shows for him at the time I would be very impressed. I can’t really say I will miss Cane’s too much though. Notorious asshole bouncers, kinda weird layout inside, tough to get drinks, sound was pretty meh, high idiot to standard citizen ratio…it was basically the HOB before the HOB arrived. They hosted some good shows for a while when they were the main player for a venue that size, but I would’ve preffered to catch the same shows I saw there at the Brick By Brick if I had the choice. And that certainly ain’t saying much. Plus at the BbyB you can always hit up JV’s after a show for fishy burritos. It will be interesting to see how much power the Wave House actually yields. If they could give the HOB a run for their money that would certainly be impressive, but alas, highly unlikely.
The band that opened for David Cross was “Ultra Baby Fat”
Real bummer…Cane’s was a great venue.
it wasn’t my favorite venue, but I did see some great bands there: Black Keys, MIA, Justice, various Wu-Tang members, and the Misfits.
