Budget cuts and horses
To cap off what’s been a bummer of a day, a press release annoucing the sale of the San Diego Police Department’s horses just landed in my inbox. Yup—to help close the city’s budget deficit, they’re auctioning off the horsies, and downsizing the canine unit, as voiceofsandiego.org’s Keegan Kyle reported on Tuesday.
The press release has pictures of all the horses—and they’re adorable. And they have names! Like Trigger and Bret and Bandit. Junior, Major and Austin. My favorite, though, is named Wam:
I bet his handlers will miss him. Hope he finds a good home. For deets on the auction:
The San Diego Police Department has scheduled an online auction for the sale of horses and equipment running from February 1 through February 10, 2010. The web site is www.publicsurplus.com.
Potential buyers are not allowed on the premises except for the specific viewing date of Thursday, February 4 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Horses cannot be ridden or handled prior to sale. All questions must be submitted on the website to the main contact via email and will be answered on-line. NO PHONE CALLS.
Buyers are required to provide a safe and adequate environment for the horse(s) and the City of San Diego reserves the right to inspect the buyer’s facility. Failure to agree to this term of the sale may be cause for the City of San Diego to void the sale. The City of San Diego can provide local delivery of horses within San Diego County if needed. Winning bidder must provide payment in advance of taking possession of horse(s). If you are picking up a horse, you must do so during the following times; February 16, 17, or 18 between the hours of 8:00 a.m.-1200 p.m. each day.
There will also be other tack items, horse blankets, saddle pads, heater, saddle blankets, pipe rails, and other miscellaneous equipment for sale.
Buyers are responsible for loading and transport of purchased items and will be available for pick-up on February 16, 17, and 18 between the hours of 8:00 a.m.-1200 p.m.
