San DIego Shows–Wednesday, March 3
PLAN A: Gaux Nu Vaux, Smile Now Cry Later, Inspired Flight, Illuminauts, DJ Saul Q @ U-31. To paraphrase my predecessor, Nathan Dinsdale, you call it nepotistic, I call it nepotastic! But since this column is called what it is, I can say with 99-percent certainty that this is where I’ll be tonight (unless I get hit by a bus), because it’s my birthday party and it’s for Haiti earthquake relief. In addition to the bands, there will also be free food from 6 to 9 p.m., as well as a raffle and cool art. Holla at a brotha. PLAN B: The Appleseed Cast, Dreamend @ The Casbah. Call me senile but I’m always getting The Appleseed Cast confused with Apples in Stereo. My bad, because one time when I was making out with this girl I threw on Stereo’s snidey power-pop instead of the Cast’s foreboding post-rock masterpiece, Low Level Owl (of which they’ll be playing in it’s entirety tonight) and I killed the mood. I’d like a second chance, but you know where I’ll be. BACKUP PLAN: Tegan & Sara, Holly Miranda @ Copley Symphony Hall. Check out our awesome interview with Sara here, where she talks about T&S solo projects, the difference between Canadian and American pride, and why San Diego always conjures up bad memories for her.
OTHER COOL STUFF:
The Old In Out, Some Days, Woman @ Soda Bar.
Carmen Bradford Quartet @ Birch North Park Theatre. Bradford’s “soulful vocals and old-school approach to a tune” have allowed her to perform with Wynton Marsalis, Tony Bennett and many other greats. Part of the “Jazz in North Park” series. 27. $15 students day of show.
Kevin Cole @ Qualcomm Hall. An evening of George Gershwin songs on piano by one of today’s foremost interpreters of his music.
Dirt! The Movie @ Central Library, Downtown. Jamie Lee Curtis narrates this documentary about soil and how we mess it up. Not to be confused with the musical sequel to Joe Dirt. Starts at 6:30 p.m.
Gilbert Castellanos @ Super El Camino.
Mike Doughty @ Anthology.
Sister Speak, The Duke Wants Me Dead, Tori Roze @ Beauty Bar.
DJs Travis T, Spirit Bear & The Brothers Ralph @ Tin Can Ale House.
GALACTIC, Cyril Neville @ Belly Up.
Caustic Felon, Open Wound, Ra(z)ner, remains Forgotten @ Brick by Brick.
