Thanks to Call of Duty, soldiers also get to fight in their spare time.
Bizarre news of the day:
Activision Publishing donated $180,000 worth of its video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to Naval personnel yesterday, including a bunch at an event aboard the USS John C. Stennis in San Diego. Comedian Rob Corddry helped distribute the video games, as well as a check to Veterans Village, a shelter for homeless veterans. To quote Corddry:
Not only is it important to raise awareness of the issue of veterans’ unemployment, it is also really cool to bring a game to service members and let them have some fun after spending so much time serving their country. They really deserve it and I am so glad that I can be a part of it.
This is ironic for three reasons. First, as a Daily Show correspondent, this is exactly the kind of story Corddry would make fun of. Why? Well, for ironies two and three: Surely soldiers see enough battle in the theater that they don’t especially need to face it again on the home theater system—and probably the last gift you oughta give anyone who’s unemployed is an addictive video game.

As an avid player of Modern Warfare Deuce, and a member of the game’s online community–where people from around the world can virtually blast each other to kingdom come in an orgy of virtual blood and body parts, I can tell you that military personnel love this game! I don’t know if it’s simply because it happens to be the greatest video game ever made, or if it’s something deeper, more complicated than that. I just know they like it, and, at 60 bucks a game, Corddry is doing a great thing giving them out.
Did I just give you your next column topic?
I would totally go there if I hadn’t written about Call of Duty twice already. Not sure I can justify a third column about the same video game. But I do love the shit out of that thing
I’m sure it’s a great game. Just flippantly point out the, you know, irony…and waiting for the Call of Duty fans to start flipping out.
