San Diego Shows–Wednesday, April 7
PLAN A: Transfer, Scanners, Lyon Crowns, DJ Al Squared @ Beauty Bar. Local alt-rockers Transfer always put on a great show, but it’s the moody Brits in Scanners (above) that tighten my undies. I tweeted about these guys a few months ago after hearing their PJ Harvey-flavored single “Salvation,” and I’m excited to see how they bring it live. PLAN B: Non (Boyd Rice), Cult of Youth, Skinwalker, Axxa, DJ Human Jerky @ Radio Room. He’s reportedly a hero of Marilyn Manson’s, and he may or may not be some kind of fascist, but Rice is pretty much the forefather of modern industrial and noise music, so listen up. At 53, the dude can still belt out, “Do you want total war?” over that death-drum marching band, and it sounds as timely as ever. BACKUP PLAN: Rocco Deluca, Josh Damigo, Tommy Graf @ The Casbah.
OTHER COOL STUFF:
Exene Cervenka @ M-Theory Music. The co-lead singer of the legendary band X and undisputed queen of the Los Angeles punk scene of the early ’80s, is in the midst of a self-financed tour of West Coast independent record stores, and her San Diego appearance will be at M-Theory Music (915 W. Washington St. in Mission Hills) at 6 p.m. Cervenka, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last summer, says she had several criteria for the tour: free of charge, all-ages, early start time and “in a place we love to be,” and she encourages fans to bring their X records for her to autograph. So, if you have some extra cash, pay her back by buying a copy of her 2009 release, Somewhere Gone, or something else from her merch table.
The Garden @ Lawrence Family Jewish Center. Terrific documentary about an organic community farm in South Central that’s coveted by developers with the support of the city. $5 admission benefits Slow Food San Diego.
“Chilltown” w/Halcyonaire @ Tin Can Ale House.
Throwback Trunk Show @ Soda Bar.
Gretchen Parlato, Julian Shore @ The Loft.
