Carl DeMaio denies Zapf endorsement
In Turds & Blossoms this week, we classify City Council member Carl DeMaio’s introduction of Lorie Zapf at Carly Fiorina as an endorsement. He disagrees and has asked for a correction.
Here’s what he actually said, verbatim in his introduction:
We can’t have accountable government unless we have leaders who are willing to work at all levels, work cooperatively together and I am really looking forward to working with Carly to advance San Diego City’s interests in Washington to make sure we get our fair share.
We have another potential council member who will do just that as well: Work to bring San Diego’s issues to the forefront with our elected leaders in Sacramento and in Washington.
I want to introduce Lorie Zapf, the Republican candidate for District 6 San Diego City Council.
Personally, I’m getting sick and tired of DeMaio “introducing” Zapf at events, singing her praises, then claiming it’s not an endorsement. After all, Zapf is the San Diego County Republican Party’s endorsed candidate and DeMaio stood right next to her throughout the entire rally.
I stick by my interpretation, because, really, that’s exactly how the audience interpreted it.
If DeMaio wants to deny it, then I recommend that he say so, explicitly, the next time he’s on stage with her.
Update 4:22 pm: In what seems to be an attempt to prove that an “introduction” doesn’t equal an endorsement, DeMaio has now posted an image on Facebook in which he poses with Steve Hadley, Council member Donna Frye’s chief of staff, who also happens to be a Democratic opponent of Zapf in the D-6 race. DeMaio “introduces” Hadley as a “hard-working” staffer on Twitter, but not as a candidate.

it isn’t by accident that carl happens to just be at all of these events.
it’s called scheduling.
i’m pretty sure if you don’t wish to endorse someone, you don’t have their events, scheduled on your calendar.
…me thinks carls a fibber……
You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite commentators, DF.
No doubt zapf is going to lose, especially with Ryan Huckabone and Kim Tran seem to be running strong grassroots campaigns as they have signs all over the district. I wouldn’t be surprised if Zapf polls 4th in this race. But it will be close. However, look at the above pictures. Carl seems very comfortable with Steve but notice the distance between him and Zapf I think he knows she’s a loser, but doesn’t want to tick off the Citizens against Lawsuit abuse crowd. this is very funny.
