PLAN A: Bell Biv Devoe @ House of Blues. Dig your Starter jacket and baggy overalls out of the attic because BBD is back with the New Jack Swing for dat ass. If Ricky Bell doesn’t sport a high-top fade, I’ll be pissed. PLAN B: Subtle, Zach Hill and Illuminauts, Bill Wesley @ The Casbah. Jordan from Subtle is an Oakland resident with San Diego ties, so make it out to see how the local boy has parlayed his talents to one of the most progressive hip-hop / rock groups around. PLAN C: Smashing Pumpkins @ RIMAC Arena. I’m not really recommending this show. I’m just letting you know that it’s happening, in case you have a boner for Billy Corgan and his egomaniacal nonsense. BACKUP PLAN: Blitzen Trapper in-store @ M-Theory Music. -Todd Kroviak
All that I ever wanted to say is so eloquently put with this:

PLAN A: Wet Hair, Peaking Lights, Jill St. John, Jeans Wilder @ Che Café. It’s a night of bedroom projects at this late-starting show (10 p.m.), with four acts you’ve never heard of emitting all manner of beautiful and grating textures. If there’s a case to be made for a new American underground, this is it. PLAN B: Japanther, The Underground Railroad to Candyland @ Bar Pink. Provocative punk duo Japanther are apparently kind of a big deal in the New York art scene. How this happened is anybody’s guess, but having enough pull to recruit former Crass member Penny Rimbaud to pitch in on live performances deserves some serious respect. BACKUP PLAN: Kraak & Smaak @ The Loft @ UCSD.
Man, somebody call The Academy! SDSU might continuously make Top-10 lists for one of the best party schools, but UCSD is where I would apply. Interestingly enough, after the above went to press Japanther announced they’d be playing a free show at UCSD’s Visual Art’s Performance Space. And while I’m certainly not trying to dissuade anyone from seeing them at Bar Pink (especially since The Underground Railroad to Candyland is as fun as a Charlie the Unicorn cartoon), but since the Japanther show at UCSD starts promptly at 7:30PM, that means that you could literally see all three of the “plans” above. So after Japanther wraps up, head to The Loft around 8:45 and shake your booty to Kraak and Smaak, whose Dutch name translates to “crunchy and tasty.” Oh, yeah. So after coming down from the Red Bull and, uh, other party accoutrements, cross campus to the Che, stopping by your car along the way to smoke, uh, a cigarette, and then get your mind blown by some of the weirdest music you’ll hear and from four different bands. Deep breathes, pace yourself.
If you’re not feeling up to the UCSD music marathon then there’s some great local bands playing and, well, some other stuff:
The Fascination, Lisa the Lush, Someday Assassin @ Radio Room-The Fascination was one of the biggest surprises from this year’s All Local Music issue. Smart, catchy pop-rock with a Brit singer that can belt it out.
Little Dragon, Manuok, Anomie Belle @ Beauty Bar-Weird, Swedish electro-pop that’s perfect for random make-out sessions with people whose name you can’t remember. Local opener Manuok has a new album out and I personally can’t wait to hear it.
The Glossines @ Hensley’s Flying Elephant-Kick-ass girl pop-punk in the coolest North County dive bar you’ve never been to. Not to mention I want to live out the Dead Milkmen’s “Punk Rock Girl” with the lead singer. She floats my boat.
Portugal The Man, Earl Greyhound, Wintersleep @ SOMA-My little brother says they’re the next Mars Volta. I don’t see it but they definitely have “next big thing” status. Read the rest of this entry »
PLAN A: Love is All, Vivian Girls, Grand Ole Party @ The Casbah. Love is All can blatantly steal keyboard riffs from The Clean (“Wishing Well”), but they’re so ecstatic about it, it’s impossible to fault them. And who knows who The Clean is anyway? PLAN B: As I Lay Dying, Destroy the Runner @ Jumping Turtle. I find it incredible that the latest album from Christian metal band As I Lay Dying debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard charts. Wait, I’m catching a little bit of déjà vu. -Todd Kroviak
Love is All are super fun and are getting some great reviews for their new album. Check out the video for “Wishing Well.” Very Nena-esque… Not to mention the fact that I totally have a puppy-dog crush on Vivian Girls bassist Kickball Katy.
AS I Lay Dying is filming their show tonight for their first live DVD so I would imagine they’ll really be putting on a great show, if not a little bit more metal posturing.
If you’re not into those shows, fellow blogger Rosey is super-smitten with Angus of Aussie-folkies Angus and Julia Stone, who are opening their U.S. tour at the Loft at UCSD tonight. Have to admit, very lovely stuff. Let me know if you need a wing-man Rosey. I’ll distract Julia for you.
Another good one is Diablo Dimes at Beauty Bar. Not sure when this guy split San Diego for the “Deep South,” but welcome back sir.
And the rest:
Elisa, Ari Hest @ Belly Up
Matisyahu, Flobots @ House of Blues-Don’t try and get backstage ladies. It’s against his religion to even shake your hand.
Mystery Train @ O’Connel’s
Lady Dottie and the Diamonds @ U-31
Electric Waste Band (Grateful Dead cover band) @ Winston’s
Save Amos, Blue in the Face, DJ Sean Mop @ Radio Room

“All love stories are beautiful at the beginning, and what we’re witnessing now is the beginning of a new one: America and Barack Obama. The story begins with the world spinning off its axis, the country mired in dark times and the way of the fresh-faced savior seemingly blocked by a juggernaut agent of the Status Quo. Only in the end, in the moment that sportswriters die for and that comes once a generation in politics if we’re lucky, the phenom rises to the occasion, gets the big hit in the big game and becomes a man before our very eyes. The old power recedes, and the new era is born.” -Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone magazine, December 27, 2007, a few weeks before Obama won the Iowa caucus.

With 27% of the vote cast early, early results show Sherri Lightner with a small lead in the District 1 City Council race, April Boling with a small lead in the District 7 City Council race, and Jan Goldsmith with a large lead in the City Attorney race. More updates as fast as I can type.

On election eve their ain’t a whole lot going on in the Dego tonight but their’s definitely one show that is worth yout while if you’re done filling out your voter sample pamphlets:
PLAN A: Tartufi @ Bar Pink. These San Francisco darlings transform the mundane tendencies of today’s indie rock, stretching experimentation to its extremes while still making listenable music. -Todd Kroviak
Once they wrap up, you can’t go wrong at U-31 to catch the last songs by Lady Dottie and the Diamonds.
And for nostalgia, I’d personally be interested in checking out Maxwell at the House of Blues. If you don’t remember Maxwell, he was the late ’90s R&B crooner, who, along with D’Angelo, supposedly represented the new-guard of neo-soul or whatever. But I must say, I had more sex to Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite my freshman year in college more than any other record. Check out “Til the Cops Come Knockin” if you don’t believe me. As my roomate put it, that’s some “panty-droppin, boot-knockin music!” For a brief time, this dude was the future of R&B, and I’m curious to see if he’s still got it. Either way, if you need somewhere to take a date tonight (albeit a third date), it’d be a good one.
Here’s some other noteworthy shows tonight
‘A Voting Pre-Party’ featuring HIaleah, Bedford Grove, The Roman Spring @ The Casbah
Beauty Bordello @ Beauty Bar
The Tighten Ups@ The Ruby Room
Open Mic hosted by Jimmie Lunsford @ Lestat’s
Electric Waste Band (Grateful Dead cover band)@ Winston’s
So, the run of Memphis, the hit musical at the La Jolla Playhouse is sold out. How sold out? When an injury forced the theater to cancel a single performance, they were unable to reschedule any ticketholders. Meaning, basically, that it’s a tough ticket to get. But if you can’t get in to see the raucous, tender musical about the early days of rock ‘n roll, you can still catch performances from some of the cast members, whose Broadway credits include Spamalot, Walk the Line, Wicked, Hairspray, Mary Poppins and plenty more, who are stepping up on Monday (their only day off) for a good cause.
From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. they’ll be belting out tunes in Room 157 of Galbraith Hall on the UCSD Campus. Tickets are $10, and all the proceeds go to the UCSD Department of Theater and Dance Graduate Acting Showcase for the ‘09 class, several of whom have parts in Memphis. Galbraith Hall is just across Scholar’s Drive from the Playhouse–it isn’t in the Playhouse compound.
This could also serve as an introduction to UCSD’s theater department (disclosure: my wife teaches there) for the uninitiated. It’s worth noting that UCSD is the number three theater school in country, just after Yale School of Drama and NYU, and the work done there during the school year showcases some very talented artists. Several students will also be performing on Monday, along with the aforementioned Memphis cast members.
So how do you like that? Both San Diego DMV offices (Hillcrest and Clairemont) will be closed on the only Saturday that they’d normally be open this month, according to a press release from the DMV: “Due to the delayed state budget and staffing constraints,” it says. Has anyone else noticed the insanely long lines outside the Hillcrest DMV? Has it always been that way? It’s not like I’ve never waited in line at a DMV, but I’ve never had to actually stand in a line that stretches outside and around a DMV office.
Thanks to AnnaMaria for sending me the link to this Daily Show segment. High-larious. (Sorry I can’t embed the video—WordPress prefers YouTube). Definitely watch it—well worth your time.
Also, Huffington Post went all TMZ tabloid-journalism-weird with a photo slide show of the Palin daughter’s BF. Not sure whether to laugh or sigh.
